Episode 3 – Ink
Claire is being hounded by Gretchen to share her secret but Claire is trying her best to avoid her. When Noah comes to bring Claire a moving in gift he meets Gretchen and invites her out to lunch where she makes it clear that she knows about Claire’s ability. Noah considers calling in the Haitian but Claire tells him she will handle it on her own.

Back at campus and Claire tells Gretchen she wants to trust her and so shares the secret, even demonstrating it to her. Noah calls and apologises and he and Claire are back as loving father daughter. Claire offers Gretchen the bed of her recently deceased room-mate.

Peter is being sued by someone who he saved in a bus crash. When Peter goes to meet him at the hospital he doesn’t recognise him from the bus at all and believes it is a scam to get money from the Petrelli’s. The man is the Carnival ring leader Samuel Sullivan who is actually out scouting Peter for his eligibility to join their circle.

At the hospital Peter meets a receptionist who he thinks is being rude but actually she is deaf. She starts to see colours whenever she hears sounds, like the coffee mug as it smashes to the ground. The nurse says she may have synaesthesia but she refuses to believe it. Back at Peters apartment Samuel has broken in and uses his ink ability to add himself to the newspaper cut out of the bus crash. When Peter returns he spots it and then goes to find Samuel to apologise.

Samuel drops the lawsuit and tells Peter he is the man he always thought he would be and leaves, Peter suggests that he visit his family home after the loss of Samuel’s brother. Samuel goes but the lady of the house refuses to let him in. Later Peter is called to the scene of an emergency, the house has been engulfed by a sink-hole. Peter then gets a pain in his wrist, a compass has appeared tattooed onto his arm.

Parkman and his boss get a warrant to search the house of a suspected drug dealer. Sylar wants Parkman to use his ability to solve the case sooner but he refuses. Sylar starts giving Matt clues as to the whereabouts of the suspect and together they find him. Matt then continues to search the house but Sylar has to point him in the right direction. Matt finds a toy bunny and then a ransom note. Eventually he uses his power on the suspect and finds a dead girls body under the stairs. Matt beats up the suspect only to be stopped by his boss.

Matt tells his boss what’s happened and that there is a body under the stairs but when he checks there is nothing there. It was all a hoax by Sylar using Matt’s ability against him! Matt is told he better have a damn good lawyer as he is going to be dragged over the coals on this but Matt caves and uses his ability to make it look like he is the hero.

Pretty good episode this week, I’m really liking the Matt and Sylar thing they’ve got going on, it’s working well and I hope they can make it work longer throughout the season. Still keen to know what’s going on with the whole Samuel part of the story and now this deaf colour hearer…interesting, but what good would it do really?

Apparently, Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie will make it on Blu-ray before Christmas after all. According to site Den of Geek, ‘Inglourious Basterds’ will be released on December 15 in the US (December 14 in the UK). No disc details are available, and this release date is unofficial until an announcement is made.

A lot of people want a Venom movie. Makes sense, I guess; he’s fanged, evil, oozing, looks great on screen. While villains that are so specifically the mirror image of a hero don’t do a lot for me, I see why people like the character. Sony likes the character because anything that can spin off from the success of Spider-Man is a good thing. The studio has been looking into making a Venom flick for a while, and they’ve now got a new draft in hand from the current writers. Where does that leave the movie?

Sci-Fi Wire talked to Zombieland co-writer Paul Wernick, who with his Zombieland writing partner Rhett Reese has been working on a new version of Venom for Sony. “We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward,” Wernick tells the site. Doesn’t seem like there’s any way this can move forward before Spider-Man 4, but if nothing else let’s hope that Sony is looking to emulate the work going on over at Marvel Studios. If Sony is smart, they’re looking at Spidey 4 and Venom as connected, complimentary movies; whichever comes first should have repercussions in the other film.

Last night US TV was hit with three Seth MacFarlane animated comedy shows. Family Guy, American Dad and new Family Guy spin off The Cleveland Show hit the airwaves.

Last season I reviewed every episode, I’m not feeling that this year. Instead I’ll give you a brief breakdown on my thoughts.

Firstly The Cleveland Show. Pretty standard pilot episode stuff. Cleveland loses his house in the divorce and decides to take Cleveland Jnr to California. On the way they stop in his old hometown and Cleveland bumps into his old flame. They get married and so we have the start of a new chapter. Does this mean Cleveland won’t be in Family Guy anymore? not too many laughs but should hope for something more exciting in the future.

American Dad was a pretty funny episode this week where to man Steve up a bit Stan sends him to war, a Vietnam war re-enactment. Some good stuff here that makes up for last seasons dodgy episodes.

Family Guy opened with ‘Road To The Multiverse’ where Stewie shows Brian his invention to travel dimensions and so off they go. Whilst not a lot happened in terms of plot it was pretty funny to see certain scenes like the Robot Chicken dimension and the best coming from the Disney dimension – some brilliant animation there.

I love September.

Season 4, Episodes 1 – “Orientation” & 2 – “Jump, Push, Fall”

Heroes is back and the opening montage made up for all the injustices of the past and made me think…maybe. All the old faces are here, regrettably, but there has been a new twist added which gives me a little hope!

Where to start? Ok, we open with a funeral taking place, lots of strange men and women about. They are circus folk who travel with their carnival from place to place, let by the mysterious Samuel Sullivan. They are burying his brother and throw a compass into the grave before Sam waves his hands and the ground closes atop of the casket.

Claire is now in college and her roommate is a total over achiever who has her life all mapped out in front of her. During an algebra pre-entry test Claire has a vision of being shot by the hunters from last season and leaves. At the first party of the semester Claire’s roommate challenges her to Guitar Hero (she says 3 but it is quite clearly 4 or higher). Claire wants to play with her new friend Gretchen who recognised her name from the massacre at her high school.

Later Claire returns to her room to find it empty but the window open, looking out, her roommate is splattered on the ground. Gretchen takes an interest in finding out if this was murder or not, the police say it was suicide due to the note found but Claire doesn’t remember there being a note. Gretchen says they do tests like push, fall or throw by making a dummy the same height and weight of the victim and throwing, pushing and dropping it from the same height to see where it lands and determine how the victim dies. Claire decides to try this herself but is spotted by Gretchen.

Nathan meets with his mother who spots that he is starting to remember who he really is. Angela asks Matt Parkman to erase Nathan/Sylars memory again but Matt say he doesn’t do that anymore. Nathan starts to get his powers by moving a coffee mug and sparking lightning between his hands.

Noah is worried he’s going to be next to die at the hands of Tracey Strauss and is right, he is almost drowned in his car but Danko saves him. They decide to team up but Noah confronts Tracey and wants to help her. She then goes to Danko who is killed by a mysterious Carny. She manages to scare him off and calls Noah for help. He finds a key buried under Danko’s skin.

Noah enlists Peter, who has been working as a paramedic again, to help him when he opens the security box the key fits. They bump into the Carny again who has great speed and this time it is Peter who frightens him off. Inside the box was a strange compass. Peter tells Noah he doesn’t want anything to do with it, he was just there to get the power.

Later Noah is attacked and loses the compass, Peter is the paramedic who saves him and Tracey comes to visit, she and Noah get close.

Hiro and Ando now run a “Dial A Hero” business and their first client is a little girl who loses her cat up on some scaffolding. When Hiro stops time to save Ando he again gets a nosebleed. He tells Ando he’s been to the doctors who tell him he is dying. Hiro accounts the day he knew he wanted to be a hero as the day he got his fortune read at a carnival. He then vanishes back in time to that day. He doesn’t want to interfere with the past again but the ring leader, Samuel Sullivan, convinces him that he should go on a path of rightousness. He pushes Hiro into his young sister who is then saved from being drenched in slushy. In the present Ando is in love with Hiro’s sister Kimmy but she hates him because that slushy fell on her. Now that’s changed and they are an item. Hiro goes back to the present and decides to right all the wrongs in his life.

Matt hasn’t used his powers in six weeks but is starting to lose his mind. Sylar keeps appearing to him and telling him to use his power and to bring him back. Matt keeps refusing and as such starts yelling to nothing in public. His superiors think he is losing it and he is part of a self help class where he covers his power by pretending it was a drug he used.

At home he is plagued by the water boy who Sylar convinces him is sleeping with his wife. Eventually Matt succumbs and gets into the waterboys head, telling him not to come by anymore.

So, what did I think? I was actually impressed with the Matt Parkman angle, for once! I’m intrigued how this may play out as an addiction that he can’t control and whilst it is an excuse to show Sylar off to the world, it’s working. I’m a little peeved that we’ve got the same old faces back, I guess there are too many fans out there of each camp, can you really kill off Peter, Claire or Hiro? No. So we’re going to be stuck with these storylines again, the same old stuff.

Still, much better than last season already so here’s hoping.

Blockbuster Video

Video stores of every kind have faced serious difficulty over the past few years as Netflix has become the de facto movie rental outlet. The Blockbuster chain has been closing stores at a steady clip, and is likely to continue doing so for the next few years. But a new regulatory filing released this week suggests the end of the chain’s existence as a big brick and mortar outlet could come sooner, rather than later.

THR reports that Blockbuster’s filing announces the potential closure of 960 stores, which is about 20% of the remaining 4,400. The closings would take place over the next twelve months. But the brand isn’t likely to go away. Redbox, with those $1/day DVD rental kiosks you see in grocery stores, is providing the new competitive rental model. Blockbuster only has about 500 kiosks right now, but claims it plans ten thousand by this time next year. That’s a serious explosion, but given the once-powerful company’s stature within the DVD rental market, likely an achievable goal.

I have to admit I’m of two minds about the store closings and potential end of the chain as a walk-in outlet. That’s a lot of jobs to lose, and any video store is a breeding ground for people who love movies. As video stores everywhere go out of business, we lose one more method film fans have of connecting to one another and sharing the thing we all love. On the other hand, this is Blockbuster, the company that created its own censored edits of films and that wielded an unhealthy amount of power over film distribution by refusing to carry some films with content that didn’t fit a family-friendly profile. (But not all of them; you couldn’t get the theatrical cut of Dead Alive, but you could get an unrated Red Shoe Diaries softcore flick.) My gut instinct before thinking about the loss of jobs is ‘good riddance to Blockbuster’, but I know it’s not that simple.

Lost

While speaking at a Seattle music and arts festival, Lost exec-producers Carlton Cuse, Eddy Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz dropped several morsels of goodness for fans. First off, they reiterated that we shouldn’t expect every single mystery to be solved come the series finale at the end of season six. (And honestly, at this point, how could we expect them to?) Also of note was a dose of reality announced by Mr. Cuse regarding the future of the franchise—while season six is the end of the series as far as they know, Disney will probably do something with the Lost franchise down the line.

If you don’t think that last bit is truly newsworthy, I’m with you. Lost is a ginormous success for Disney, and we can’t seriously expect them to stop milking this cash cow. If anything, Lost: Via Domus is all the proof we need to see that Disney is willing to push the franchise as much as they can, regardless of quality. There’s some value in considering what else could be done with the franchise, but I can’t think of anything I want for the series right now except for a fitting end.

As for the news that not all will be revealed, I believe this is something Cuse and Lindelof have been hinting at for some time now (they may have even said the same thing at Comic-Con). Logistically, Lost has raised many questions by this point, and there just may not be a way to resolve everything without breaking the narrative and spoon feeding answers to the audience for several episodes. Of course, this could just be an easy way to escape from many early setups that probably have no logical resolution at this point in the series.

Read more about what Cuse and crew said over at Pop Distillery.
