Starting out as a sketch on “Da Ali G Show“, Sacha Baron Cohen created Borat, a television reporter and celebrity from Kazakhstan whose grasp of English language and fundamentals gets him in spots of bother. The Borat movie is an extended sketch show as Borat leaves his native land for “US and A” in order to learn some important lessons to bring back home to improve the economy.

Along the way Borat has a driving lesson, attempts to buy a car with a “chick magnet”, has an interview with some feminists and brings a prostitute over to dinner at a posh function. These are just the tip of the iceberg as he travels from New York to LA in order to meet the new woman of his dreams, Pamela Anderson.

If you seen this character before then you will know what to expect, if you’ve heard of Baron Cohen and his hijinks before then you’ll be aware of what’s about to happen, but if you’re like the plethora of American victims then be afraid. Borat comes across as incredibly offensive and ignorant it would be hard to find any laughter in these sketches if it wasn’t for the blindness of his victims.

Such as when asking what is the best gun to kill a Jew, the shopkeeper doesn’t hesitate in telling him, its these attitudes and beliefs from some American people that really make this movie what it is. It’s not surprising those who were pranked or those from across the pond may not find this quite as funny but once again Baron Cohen has exploited the unsuspecting public and used them to great effect.

Undoubtedly some of the sketches are scripted, they help to keep the story of the movie flowing but they are the minority, being over shadowed by laughter you’ll feel slightly bad for later. Some of the scenes are alternatives from sketches from the TV show but these can be forgiven as telling the same joke to different people is bound to have different results.

After Ali G you would have expected people to be a bit wiser but Borat does it again. Great fun to watch you’ll wonder just how some people can be so small minded and wonder is it really Borat who’s the ignorant one?
